Department of Chemistry

Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry was established in 1980. It offers four different specilization in chemistry with (1) Organic Chemistry, (2)Analytical Chemistry, (3) Physical Chemistry and (4) Inorganic Chemistry. In addition to Master's degree, from 2010 onward, department has also started one year Post graduate diploma course in Sophisticated Analytical Instruments.

M.Sc course is of four semesters with an intake capacity of 100 including 50 self-financed seats. Presently, 42 scholars are pursuing their doctoral work in the department and more than 450 students have been awarded their Ph.DS till date. At present, department has six regular, three contractual based and four self-financed faculties.

Department has successfully completed various research projects funded by various government agencies such as UGC, DST, CSIR, BARC, BRNS, GUJCOST etc. Further, some projects were also done with private industries like Du Pont, Agro Chemical (USA), Merck Inc., (USA), Spechem (Czech Republic), Spec Biospec (Netherland), R. J. W. Pharma (USA), Zydus, Cadilla Healthcare, Ranbaxy, Dabur Foundation, Nicholas-Piramal, Synergia Life Sciences, Sam Fine-o-chem, Shukla Ashar, Almelo, Astra Zeneca, Claries, Alembic Ltd., , Mackson Pharma etc. Further, there are collaborations with various national and foregin institutes, some of worth-mentioning being the New Jersey Medical School, Vienna Institue of Technology, Austria; Josai University, Japan; the Southern Research Institute, Alabama, USA; National Institute of Health, USA; National Cancer Institute, USA, Meiji Pharmaceutical University, Japan; DIPAS, New Delhi; Mysore University, Mysore; IIT, Chennai; CDRI, Lucknow  etc.

Department of Chemistry has successfully completed DST-FIST program and UGC-DSA-SAP-1 programme is ongoing. The research thrust areas include Synthetic and Medicinal Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Thermodynamics and Physicochemical properties of solutions. Material Science, Physical Chemistry, Catalysis, Inorganic Chemistry, Nanoscience etc.

Various eminent scientists, professors, industrialists, experts from different non-government organizations have visited the department for lectures and research advise.

The deparment has various instruments such as NMR-400MHz, Single crystal X-RAY spectrophotometer, GC-MS, HPLC, UPLC, HP-TLC, TGA_DSC-DTA, FTIR, HeadspaceGC, Polarimeter, Sound and densitometer, Refractometer, pH meter, hydrogenator, conductometer, UV-VIS spectrophotometer, Potentiometer, Microwave synthesizer, Parellal Synthesizer etc.  The department has been awarded by Centre of Excellence.

Various industrial and institutional tours are also organized by the deparment to motivate the students. Students are also encouraged to do research by assigning them small projects for which they have to submit dissertation.

Apart from adademics, other curricular activities are also organized by the department to create social awareness among students. For this, plastic free campus program, blood donation camp, picnic to historical places etc., are also organized.
