This is the sixth lecture in Prof. Avadhesh Kumar Singh Memorial Lecture Series delivered by Mr. Julian Crandall Hollick who produced many award-winning radio documentaries for NationalPublic Radio and BBC Radio 4. He has written two books Ganga and Apna Street along with many articles about cultural aspects of India. He traveled the entire length of Ganga in 2004/5. He also teaches Cross-Cultural Journalism through an annual workshop at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai.
In the present lecture titled Many Myths of Ganga, Mr. Hollick explains how Ganga has two quite distinct personalities and is three distinct rivers in order to explain how the project of cleaning Ganga needs to take cognizance of the distinct scale and flow of each of the three zones. He also emphasizes how saving Ganga by just running a cleaning project is a myth as the issue of pollution is secondary to lack of water and how India needs to curb /control taking so much water out of Ganga and expect her to somehow survive. He also discusses various myths on Ganga as found on its various shores.
