Department of Chemistry

From the Desk of the Head

Dear learned visitorWaDescription: C:\Users\CTP\Desktop\Dr. H S Joshi-2.jpgrm Greetings from the Department of chemistry, Saurashtra University Rajkot. Ours is one of the department established in 1979 on the main campus. It started as a single faculty department in the subject of chemistry to the students mainly coming from the rural background and impart necessary skills required for the grooming chemical industries in this western part of the country, for creating self-entrepreneurs and also churn out academicians and researchers who can take up jobs in educational institutes and research laboratories. With a small beginning, the path for progress and development was smooth and gradual. Today we are one of the top departments in the state of Gujarat. The department has excelled in teaching and research with a sanctioned strength of 11 faculty, more than six technical and lab staff, ably assisted by the administrative support staff. More than 3000 students were awarded M. Sc. degree in different branches of specialization namely organic, inorganic, physical, analytical, and PGDSAIT Chemistry. The growth of the department is synonymous with the setting up and evolution of giant drugs and Chemical industries in the surrounding environs. The recognition of the departmental research is quite evident as UGC has sanctioned three phases of SAP, first phase of DSA. Sanctioned two phases of DST-FIST Program. The feather in the glory cap of the department is UGC has sanctioned phase one of center of excellence to our university recognizing its research and academic contribution by denoting it as a nodal department. The department houses various sophisticated equipment such as 13C NMR, Tensile Testing Machine, TGA, DTA and DSC, High-Temperature GPC, Elemental Analyzer, Fluorescence Spectrophotometer, UPLC, FT-IR, UV-Vis, and Hot stage polarizing microscope, Microwave synthesizer and several types of equipment for characterization,  testing, and analysis. The department has organized a number of national and international conferences, seminars, and workshops. Many international and national Scientists, Academician and industrialists have visited this prestigious department. The department follows the UGC and state govt. norms in the admission process. We welcome the prospective students and researchers for a useful stint with us.

The Department of Chemistry has successfully completed DST-FIST program and UGC-DSA-SAP-1 programme is ongoing. The research thrust areas include Synthetic and Medicinal Chemistry, Pharma Analytical Chemistry, Thermodynamics, and Physicochemical properties of solutions. Material Science, Physical Chemistry, Catalysis, Inorganic Chemistry, Nanoscience, etc.

Various eminent scientists, professors, industrialists, experts from different non-government organizations have visited the department for lectures and research advice.

The department has various instruments such as NMR-400MHz, Single crystal X-RAY spectrophotometer, GC-MS, HPLC, UPLC, HP-TLC, TGA_DSC-DTA, FTIR, HeadspaceGC, Polarimeter, Sound and densitometer, Refractometer, pH meter, hydrogenator, conductometer, UV-VIS spectrophotometer, Potentiometer, Microwave synthesizer, Parallel Synthesizer etc.  The department has been awarded by Centre of Excellence.

Various industrial and institutional tours are also organized by the department to motivate the students. Students are also encouraged to do research by assigning them small projects for which they have to submit a dissertation.

Apart from academics, other curricular activities are also organized by the department to create social awareness among students. For this, a plastic-free campus program, blood donation camp, picnic to historical places, etc., are also organized.
